# Could breathlessness be related to the heart?

Breathlessness can have several explanations. Its timing, triggers and associated symptoms help guide a careful assessment.

## There is more than one possible cause

Breathlessness may be related to the heart, lungs, fitness, anaemia, anxiety or other factors. A clinical assessment considers the symptom alongside your history rather than assuming a single explanation.

## Questions a cardiologist may ask

It is useful to know whether breathlessness occurs during exercise, at rest or when lying down; whether it developed suddenly or gradually; and whether there is chest discomfort, swelling, palpitations or fainting.

## Deciding whether tests are needed

The next step depends on the individual. Examination and basic observations may be followed by tests such as an ECG or echocardiogram when clinically appropriate.
